Videos of Daily Life on a Subtropical Atlantic Coast Barrier Island

Home

Feb 7th, 2009 by jeb

This site features videos of life on an Atlantic coast barrier island.

To begin viewing the videos just click on any of the video category tabs at the top of this webpage.

Weather Forecast | Weather Maps | Weather Radar | Hurricane Center

If you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser loading of the video pages can take more than ten times longer than other browsers and they may not load at all. When viewing embedded videos you should use an alternate browser other than IE. If you do not have an alternate browser installed you may click on this direct link to our browser problems post to view our recommendations.

For newcomers to this website, we have provided below a short descriptive outline of the types of webpages available here (blue lettering indicates a clickable link to the webpage described).

------------

First, the tabs at the very top of each webpage are for the various categories of video (Daily Sunrises, Daily Sunsets, Local Flora, Local Fauna, Nature, The Beach, The Broadwalk, Clouds, and Boating) and will generally contain the videos for the current day at the top of their respective webpage, possibly with a featured "best ever" sample video preceding the daily videos, followed by some of the better videos from the last few months (in descending date order so that they go backwards in time as you go down the page). In some categories we do not yet provide the daily videos, but will generally follow the above described format otherwise.

Secondly, the "Best Sunrises" and "Best Sunsets" pages are an attempt to consolidate samples of the "best ever" top videos in those categories into one place (for those that maybe just want a preview of what might be found in the archives, or are perusing videos for downloads for the screensaver app and prefer not to stumble through the extensive archives). We disclaim that selecting videos for the "best ever" collections is a difficult process, and in some cases we chose to also include videos which were maybe simply strikingly different, or depicted a highly peculiar oddity.

Thirdly, the "Archive" pages are where we offload the older "daily" videos from the main pages. The intent of these archives is to retain some of the "keeper" videos that might be of interest to newcomers for viewing, downloading, and for anyone interested in comparing differences and similarities of various conditions over time.

Lastly, the remaining pages described below are generally not for presentation of videos, although at this point in time you will find videos of various inland areas around Hollywood on the "Visit Here" webpage...

The "How To" page is for first-time visitors to this website, with tips on viewing and downloading the videos, like that -- not terribly necessary if you are familiar with working with videos, but there are a couple of tips there that some folks may not be aware of...

The "Webcams" page lists various regional and local webcams that we know to be fairly stable and popular with interesting views (we know from experience that finding actual webcams that work that are interesting for a specific area is usually an arduous task, even via webcam directories). And, since our webcam webpage normally receives the most page views, it must be of some value. Note that there is also a tip there about using a live streaming cam as a screensaver (see the information with the Marco Island cam about halfway down the webcams page for that).

The "Visit Here" page, for anyone interested in traveling here after viewing the videos, provides some basic local "insider" information that should be found to be of considerable value for anyone not knowledgeable on the area.

The "While Here" page, as a followup to the "Visit Here" page, provides again some very helpful local insider information, along with links regarding where to stay, as well as advice on accommodations, dining, activities, and the many unique area attractions. Note that this webpage also has videos from around the Hollywood area, such as downtown and various "inland" neighborhoods and parks.

The "SOFLA" page provides information for the region of South Florida along with the best links to websites that are the most pertinent to the area. This section not only focuses on tourism, but also on the the South Florida habitat, fauna, flora, history, statistics, as well as local social and political issues (along with some extraneous but interesting information that just did not fit elsewhere).

The "Screensaver" page outlines how to set up a video screen-saver that presents actual videos of scenery such as the ones featured on this site (as opposed to a still picture collage screen-saver). Note that the videos on this website can be downloaded for use in the screensaver (for free, no charge), or you could alternately use your own videos if you like the concept. There is also a tip there about using a live streaming tropical beach cam as a quick and easy live screensaver if you do not want to set up the video screensaver.

The "Posts" page is intended as a "bulletin board" to provide new information, tips specific to this site, and to note recent site changes of any significance.

The original intent of the "Daily Tips" page was primarily to provide tips focused on visiting South Florida, primarily for those unfamiliar with the region but also encompassing useful information for local residents. We are initially going to expand upon the original concept to provide tips on just about anything that might be beneficial to just about anyone, within reasonable boundaries. Any input from viewers would be appreciated, as sometimes we just get "tippers block"...
