Best Sunrises
May 12th, 2009 by jeb
Selecting the “best ever” videos is a very subjective process, and in some cases we chose to also include videos which were maybe just strikingly different or simply depicted a peculiar oddity, and therefore might not actually be entirely deserving of the "best ever" category in terms of being spectacular...
. .January 17th, 2008 - Colorful Winter Sunrise (without wind noise)
The video above was modified to dub over the wind noise with music using Windows Movie Maker (see "Eliminating Video Wind Noise" on the Posts page). This process (using Windows Movie Maker) results in a noticeable loss of color (note that the wind noise and music can be blended together to tone down the noise yet make the end product still seem somewhat natural). The music is Enya's Deora Ar Mo Chroi.

December 21st, 2008 - Winter Solstice Dawn
March 20th, 2009 - Vernal Equinox Sunrise
The dark areas on the horizon between the clouds and the ocean are torrential downpours over the gulf stream, hopefully an indicator that the "dry season" and the record breaking drought will soon end (note that March 2009 reflected ongoing weak La Niña conditions).

June 22nd, 2009 - Blue Monday
Yesterday's sunrise was a vivid pink and purple, today's sunrise was just as unusual with very deep blues. Note that there was a very slight breeze detected this morning (as well as at last evening's sunset), enough to deter no-see-ums but not enough to end the "becalmed" status as the big pond is still pretty flat... This day would bring not just record breaking heat, but an all time record of the highest temperature ever recorded on any day in recorded history of many Sofla locales -- 100 degrees in Fort Lauderdale, the first time ever in triple digits
June 21st, 2009 - A Pink Summer Solstice Sunrise -- longest day of the year....
Today's factoid: here in the northern hemisphere at latitude 26 the solstice may be technically "the longest day", but by only a few seconds (?) and that sunset/sunrise for the next few days remains the exact same time minute-wise, as Earth's angle of tilt with the sun is at apogee (or apsis? or perigee?) of it's elliptical orbit (more oval than circular) for a few days before moving enough in the orbit to affect daylight's duration -- so the days do not start getting record-ably shorter again until the 26th, and not noticeably so for many days after that. Note that this first day of summer brought record breaking heat into the area, topping out at 96 degrees....
June 21st, 2009 - Father's Day Solstice, becalmed for two weeks now... Another factoid: summer solstice has also been referred to as the "Tropic of Cancer" for centuries, and was so named because the constellation corresponding to this position of the sun in the sky was Cancer when the constellations were named nearly 2000 years ago -- however, precession (the presence of a constant torque causing a drifting effect) has resulted in a shift of the position of the Sun and constellations so that the sun is now in the constellation Gemini on the summer solstice, so it should now be more properly known as the "Tropic of Gemini"? Sustained winds of 25 mph gusting to 35 - that's tropical storm strength, difficult to hold the camera steady. The strong winds persisted for seven straight days -- check the March archive for an accounting of this unusually lengthy "blow".... We are posting the following video on the "best of" page only because it points out a rarely seen feature on the beach in the form of sand bar rivulets (be sure to check out the other ones linked to in the archives below, as this first rivulet of seven straight days was not well documented in the video...). "A rivlet runs through it" -- through the sandbar that is. Sandbar tidal rivlets are rarely seen here, and this was the first of seven consecutive sunrises that they were observed to have formed. More videos with better perspectives of the rivlets may be found in the April archive. More sunrise videos are available on the "Archives" page. If you would like to check out a map of the general location on North Beach from which most of the sunrise videos are taken click on this link for a Google map of the area -- once there, if you select "street view", then click three or four times on the arrow at "3 o'clock" in the circle in the upper left hand corner to rotate the view to the right to get to the view of the ocean, then the palm trees should look familiar if you have seen some of the videos that include them...or (before going into "street view") you could "zoom out" using the controls on the left side to get a perspective of the area, with the green area to the left where most of the sunset videos are taken.
