DO SOMETHING!

.

"There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come." -- Victor Hugo

First, regarding the above quote, you can now see it everywhere, the populace is catching on, everyone is fed up, angry, wanting to do something. Our time has come, the time is now, we can do this, and here is how...

The intent of this page will be to provide numerous ideas and detailed information on how to engage in measures to remedy the monumental problems with which 99% of us are faced.

We apologize that at this exact point in time we have only a few initial tips to offer, but they are very good tips and might be of considerable value even if you personally are unable to do something at this point but know someone else that might. Keep in mind that we do already have some other differing tips and suggestions in the "Do Something" section of the sidebar on the right side of this page (down the page a little way).

If theses tips might not be applicable to you, check back, as we do intend to add a great deal of hard-earned and wise advice.

The first section below outlines how to get organized and get your message out. The second section deals with some other good ways to just get the message out. Much more to come, we are just getting started...

How to Organize and Get Your Message Out

One way to begin the process of truly changing how America is mis-governed is to organize into activist groups that imparts reality to dumbed-down, misinformed Americans and encourage the growth of a massive grassroots movement. Below we provide some information on how to go about doing just that...

First, for now (more later), we recommend getting your hands on the following two books on the subjects of organizing, activism, and how to get your message out. Point: these books are not large, they are not at all complicated, they are very straightforward, and succinctly offer loads of realistic down to earth advice. We provide links below on how to find these books at a library near you, plus links to reviews on Google Books which has some content available to peruse...

In the interim, for checking out some advice on activism readily available online, click on this link to "The Activists Handbook" which provides "1000 ways in which you can politically and socially activate your life".

  • "The Solution is You: An Activist's Guide", ISBN 1-55591-621-X, Library of Congress number 'HM263.S247 1998'.

  • "Making the news: a guide for activists and nonprofits", ISBN '0-8133-6898-7', Library of Congress number 'HM263.S247 1998'.

The first book above has a wealth of information, particularly in the resources section. Although the book targets global warming, the advice can be applied to any activist campaign. Lastly on the first book, it focuses on peaceful, constructive, non-violent activism.

If you care to take a look at a short overview of this book on Google Books (which is only a lead in about global warming, not about how to organize), click on this link to peruse the intro on Google Books.

To find this book at a library near you, we provide the following link to a Worldcat library search, predefined for the book; it should automatically use your zip code, but if not, just enter your zip code as indicated.

If you are not familiar with Worldcat, the search results lists nearby libraries which carry the book.

Next, be aware that there are two differing versions of the second book noted above. The first link below is to a "Worldcat" search result of the original version noted above (seemingly the better version?), the second link below that is to the updated version.

The newer version is ISBN 0-8133-4095-0 (2003) and does not seem to have the impact nor the details of the original. The following link is to the Worldcat search results for the newer version . Below the link is an outline of the index of the original version to provide an idea of what it covers...

Bonus link to first thirty six pages available on Google Books (updated version).

Below are the major topics from the index of the original version to provide an idea of the content. The resources section provides an abundance of useful information.

  • Part 1 How to stage a media event.

  • Part 2 How to generate news coverage without staging a media event.

  • Part 3 How to handle unsolicited media attention.

  • Part 4 How to be a news source and media critic.

  • Part 5 How to develop a strategy to win your campaign.

  • Part 6 Resources: media how-to books; sources for lists of news outlets; news media watchdog groups; media literacy orgs; community consultants; community organizing and fund raising information; further reading on media and culture; staffing at major news outlets.

More later as time allows, but the above books are excellent starters on how to get rolling. So, get rolling!

But we would be remiss if we did not point out that you should consider establishing a non-profit organization, and although times are tough, there is a good chance that a well-intended non-profit can obtain funding. More on that later...

Another way to Get the Message Out

Realize that although this second tip specifically targets "seniors citizens", it also could be applicable for anyone that might "have some time on their hands", like the newly unemployed, the graduated but not yet gainfully employed, the underemployed, like that...

But, we start by addressing seniors, particularly any recently retired seniors that might be feeling "lost" with nothing to do, or have yet to find an interest or hobby that absorbs their time adequately, such that they might be phoning you or stopping by to visit more often than is desirable (this of course applies to non-seniors).

We start off by mentioning an excellent new book that has just been released, "Facebook and Twitter for Seniors" by Collier, ISBN 978-1-4104-3407-9 (links at bottom).

Now, many seniors are tech savvy and have a home computer, but if that is not the case, the book starts off with advice on how to purchase one, as well as information on selecting internet service providers, how to get onto the internet, and even which browsers to use and how. If they are already tech savvy and surf the `net but are not tweeting or `booking (or blogging), this is a good guide to walk them through the process.

The real value of this book is detailed graphic explanations of how to get started with Facebook and Twitter, as well as how to create a blog on blogspot.com. Frankly, in reviewing the book, I picked up a few tips about Twitter, and I consider myself fairly well informed on most online social "stuff".

So, not only might this be good for those wayward souls with not much to do, but this country and this planet need all the help they can get from all the people that you and I can pull into our ranks to demand some actual change.

Note that if the person in question does not own a computer and does not want to or cannot afford to purchase one, that most libraries have computer labs that provide patrons with computer time, although there are usually daily limits on time of an hour or two. If a university library is nearby, they often allow public access to their computer labs and most do not have a time limitation.

Note that we have established a webpage on this website which outlines how to easily create your own free website and/or blog. Click on this link if interested (or if you know someone else that might benefit).

Also, other tips and links are now available in the "Do Something" widget in the sidebar on the right, down the page a little...

Good luck to us all...

Tip: another "do something" site...

Below we pass along links to another site, which is basically a youth movement leaning toward activism for many of the ills of the planet. Precaution: their info on global warming is way understated (they used government controlled agencies as sources), or was, because we chastised them and provided more realistic information for their use. So, their other topics may be understated as well...

This is a link to the home page of the dosomething.org website. Note that they (say that they) give away grants of $500 weekly to young people (under 25) that need help getting a project to "do something" rolling...

This is a link to the "11 Facts about global warming" page on the dosomething.org website (again, their information may still be way understated).
