Videos of Daily Life on a Subtropical Atlantic Coast Barrier Island

Fauna

Note that the sea turtle hatchlings in the following two videos were being redirected to the ocean after initially going inland instead of into the ocean. If interested in information on the public release of sea turtle hatchlings click on this link. If you would like to check out the Broward county sea turtle conservation program click on this link. It has been suggested that my notes with the sea turtle videos below are somewhat jumbled and upon review I tend to agree -- sorry, I will try to straighten that out soon...

Wrong-Way Sea Turtle Hatchling Rescued (2008)

More Sea Turtle Hatchlings Rescued (2008)

Tracks from a nesting sea turtle up in Lloyd State Park.

The local "sea turtle patrol" (which cruises Hollywood and Dania beaches at dawn and digs up the turtle eggs for safekeeping and eventual "supervised hatchling release") does not venture into Lloyd State Park since there are no lights there at night (as there are on adjacent beaches) to misdirect the hatchlings (they instinctively go toward light, supposedly the direction of the dawning light and therefore the ocean). Consequently, during hatching season you might discover baby sea turtles emerging from the beach and waddling into the ocean up in the park. This also might occur outside the park when the turtle patrol sometimes erroneously concludes that a Mother turtle got spooked away without nesting (the first two videos above of the wrong-way hatchlings is one such occurrence from last year [sorry, we got the turtles before the egg...]).

.

More sea turtle nesting tracks, different day, and not in Lloyd State Park, but directly out on our North Beach. There were actually two more nests close by on this morning (May 28th, 2009), and the sea turtle beach patrol puts an orange bucket on top of the nest with a warning sign that the turtle eggs are not for making omelets, until they can get back from digging up the eggs of other nests. Note that the sea turtle beach patrol does not enter Lloyd state park, and therefore the sea turtle hatchlings emerge right onto the beach.

.

Even more sea turtle nesting tracks, the very next day (May 29th, 2009) within ten feet of yesterday's nest and again with the sea turtle patrol busy with other new nests in the area. Although we have noted articles regarding the declining sea turtle population, we have observed a notably higher number of nests this year, at least in our area.

Two Ospreys at Sunrise

If you are unfamiliar with the call of the osprey, in the above video the "sea eagles" call out to each other at about 20 seconds into the video -- the call is very similar to other eagles. We have several mating pairs that "go fishing" in the ocean and nest in the preserved "swamp" area west of the intracoastal waterway where we film most of the sunsets, so you may occasionally hear their distant calls in the sunset videos.
