Below is a compilation of published statistics (the link to source of compilation is immediately below) documenting the much-too-nicely-termed "canine homicides [of humans]" -- which are not just dog bites or dog attacks, but in reality are cases of dogs KILLING humans that DIED from being savagely MAULED to DEATH -- in the U.S., 07/06 to 07/10, supposedly compiled from the website at this link.
Disclaimer. I did not check out the stats below, and they looked flawed in some respects, but I speculate that it must be mostly correct and of some value. I presume that the numbers do not "add up" because the stats were for killings, maulings, attacks, and bitings, not just killings...

Pit Bulls by far have caused more deaths in the U.S. than any other variety....
Our suggestion is that if you do not carry a firearm, then at least arm yourself with and carry an effective defensive weapon such as pepper spray. Also, carefully consider any areas of potential encounters where any family members, which are not so armed, might venture where they might be susceptible to attack (granted, even your fenced back yard is not safe from attack, but hey, as long as people are allowed to own vicious attack dogs...).

We close with an interesting comment from a Marco Island news article regarding a pit bull attacking a human (which also was the source of the comment below)..
"RayPray writes: Pit bulls exist for only one reason. To enable guys with large tattoos but tiny IQs and even more diminutive reproductive organs to imagine they are the real men they cannot even aspire to. All such ugly vicious animals should be exterminated with a maximum of pain to beast and their micro-phallic masters...."
