April 5th, 2009 - the 5th consecutive day of rare sandbar rivlets...
So, a highly unusual if not record breaking string of sandbar tidal rivlets, during which two record breaking high temps in the low 90's were recorded, preceded by a highly unusual weeklong windstorm, preceded by a record breaking day of rainfall, all in the middle of a record breaking drought -- what next??? Click on this link to an interesting article titled "Ample evidence Florida's feeling effects of climate change", which notes curious observations on some significant changes with fauna, fish, insects, and birds in the sunshine state... Also, if you click on this link about the "dry season", you might then want to click on the "El Nino Discussion" button in the upper left hand corner of that page to see a graphical display and read about the curious weather phenomena (note however that elsewhere NOAA indicates that March 2009 reflected weak La Niña conditions rather than El Niño...).
A viewer email'd to ask if we captured the above video because the cloud formation resembled the outline of south Florida -- no, we admit that we did not notice the the similarity, good catch Elsa...

A sand castle fortress at sunrise, complete with winding moat. Although this structure was well done, the moat entrance needed to be just a couple of inches lower, as this was at high tide and only occasionally did a wave manage to wash some water into the moat entrances. There is a better take of this sand city on the beach page.

The 6th consecutive day of rare sandbar tidal rivlets, although on this day at high tide the rivlet was more like a continually shifting pond between the ocean and a lagoon. And, an update to the recent commentary on the unusual weather here -- this day would bring a wind advisory (25 mph gusting to 35, again), "red flag" fire warnings with a 75 acre brush fire a little south of here on the edge of the 'glades, and a record breaking high temperature of 92 today with temps dropping into the low 60's tonight and low 50's tomoro night!

After seven days of sandbar tidal rivlets, this is all that is left of the last one. Observe that toward the end of the video, the waves tend to converge at the point of the rivlet, which would seem to be one reason why rivlets form? Note that a viewer kindly pointed out that we have been mispelling rivlet (rivulet is the correct spelling), that the wave convergence that we finally noted above may well relate to small "rip channels" (something to do with offshore rip currents), and also that "maybe the camera guy has way too much time on his hands". . ;)
Footnote regarding the prior weather prognostication -- this did turn out to be a very chilly morning with a "feels like" temp of about 50 degrees...
