Note that we experienced the coldest, cloudiest, windiest, rainiest month of February ever here in the "Sunshine State", with records set in all categories. This highly out of the ordinary weather was attributed to an unusually strong El Nino phenomenon (warming waters in the equatorial Pacific), dropping the jet stream cold fronts further south while bringing in more warm moisture from the Pacific, with the mixture resulting in very cloudy conditions and highly unusual winter storms. So, if you view the videos and think that we have lousy "winter" weather here, we admit that it was pretty bad this winter, as it was everywhere, but we emphasize that the conditions were highly abnormal (this disclaimer for our friends in the hospitality industry down here, "encouraging" us to point this out). Our archive videos from the same time frame last year provide an interesting contrast, with beautiful sunrises every morning and only a couple of cloudy (but warm) fronts the entire month...
February 01 2010 - A Rainy, Blustery Groundhogs Day Eve...
The local weather frognostigators are talking up some kind of "never before heard of" storm system moving in from the Gulf of Illegals, the likes of which we previously had only experienced here in the summer months. Result is that the rains and storms that set in late yesterday continue this morning and will supposedly rain on into the evening hours. After a highly unusual day yesterday where we did not see any sunshine at all, especially rare for this time of year, the snowbird tourists are starting to groan and grumble, until they check out the weather "back home", where it ain't all that great there either.
February 02 2010 - Groundhogs Day Verdict, 6 more weeks of "winter weather", somewhere...
Finally, some normalcy in the weather. Overcast skies, rain, wind have departed, back to the calm, sunny, warm, dry season stuff.
February 03 2010 - At Sunrise, Take 1 of 3...
The above video was captured at official time of sunrise and reflects extremely cloudy overcast conditions. Since we often post similar videos, and indicate in our comments that it soon cleared off to be a sunny day, we are posting a second and third video today, each about ten minutes later than the prior video, which clearly illustrates that a gloomy start to the day is often soon transformed to a nice sunshiny day.
February 03 2010 - After Sunrise, Take 2 of 3...
The above video was captured about ten minutes after sunrise and already refelects a clearing sky. This was actually the result of a cold from moving in from the north, pushing the overcast clouds out of the area.
February 03 2010 - After Sunrise, Take 3 of 3...
Still some clouds to the southeast, but they are moving on out to the Carribean. The cold front dropped temps at sunrise by about ten degrees to the lower 60's, and the high today is only supposed to be mid 70's, so it is more of cool front than a cold front. Half an hour after this video was captured, the clouds were gone and we had a clear sky with full sunshine, so as bad as it looked at sunrise, it can change pretty quickly here.
February 04 2010 - A warm and breezy sunrise...
February 05 2010 - Watch where you step...
Lots of wind, lots of seaweed, lots of jellyfish, lots of clouds, lots of warmth, about 70 at sunrise.
February 06 2010 - A calm morning after the overnight front pushed thru out into the Caribbean...
February 07 2010 - Super Sunday will be sunny and cool, real cool...
February 08 2010 - No sunrise video today, overslept after super bowl partying last night (happy birthday Ponnie)...
February 09 2010 - Windy Morning
February 10 2010 - No sunrise video this morning, the cold front pushed all of the clouds out, so it was crystal clear sky, too bright to video the rising sun, plus temp was down in low 50's with strong winds, colder than the video guy likes to get out into with a "feels like" in the 40's. The cold and wind are supposed to stay with us all day and into tomoro, but at least it is sunny here and nice to be in a sheltered area in the warm sunshine...
February 12 2010
A little warmer this morning, but another cloudy cool front is moving in already. No sunrise video yesterday due to unusually extreme cold...
February 13 2010
Yet another cold front has moved in after last night's severe storms, producing yet another chilly morning, about 50 degrees at sunrise with a "feels like" temp in lower 40's due to stiff breezes. Looking forward to a sunny day with warmer temps up to about 70...
February 15 2010. Late night, slept in, no sunrise video this morning, overcast and a little too danged cold anyway...
February 16 2010. A cold, murky, rainy morning here, still very dark at sunrise, temps in mid 50's, so we bailed out on capturing a video, just too dreary and unpleasant. Yet another cold front has rolled in on top of the existing cold front, temps to drop even further overnight tonight into lower 40's. The snowbird tourists don't seem to mind all that much, but the locals are more than a little disgusted with the consistently lousy El Nino weather this winter season.
February 17 2010. Ditto yesterday, except that the "feels like" temperature was in the upper 30's. Result, no sunrise video on this frigid morning. Will be glad when this damned cold spell is over, no more wishing for cooler weather like we did back in December during the record breaking summer like heat wave that we experienced right before the historic record breaking two week long cold "deep freeze" cold wave that started on the first day of January...
February 18 2010. We hereby announce a temporary suspension of capturing sunrise videos until we get some warmer weather. For the record, the "feels like" temperature was in the mid 40's again. The entire videographer crew has gone on strike due to suffering from various combinations and permutations such as the sniffles, pink eye, sore throats, chapped lips, and ear infections from standing around for half an hour at sunrise in the winter-like cold that we have been experiencing here for the last week or so. Fortunately, we have had warm sunshine during the daytime and everyone is soaking up extra vitamin D, out of the wind chill of the brisk breezes of course - a delightful past-time, but not much of a way to exercise just walking out to the patio (some of the crew have been observed pouring a dark liquid out of flasks into the lemon echinacea tea that we serve them, they call it "vitamin W"). For whatever it's worth, looks like the weekend should bring some warmer temps at sunrise, so check back in a day or two if sunrise videos are your thing. We have some northern snowbird friends coming in for the weekend, maybe we can get them to go out and stand around in the cold for half an hour at sunrise to capture videos, they will probably think that it's "warm" here...
February 19 2010. Our temporary suspension of capturing sunrise videos has been extended to include today. Temperature was up to 48 degrees this morning at sunrise and with north winds of 10 mph, the resulting "feels like" conditions were much colder than we are yet ready to tolerate with our combined afflictions of sore throats, dry chapped skin, sniffles, borderline pink eye and ear infections. We looked out the window and it is cloudy in the east, rather gray, an unspectacular sunrise anyway, so we look to tomorrow and hope for less frigid conditions. It is supposed to start a gradual warm-up of about five degrees today, still about ten degrees below normal here. Check back in a day or two, sunrise videos should be going again soon. Meanwhile, another sunny day is on tap, a chance at a relaxing day soaking up vitamin D along with a little vitamin W in our tea...
February 20 2010 - Finally, temps in the mid 50's at sunrise, a tolerable chill, but not exactly warm...
February 22 2010 - A soggy mornin in cloudy Florida...
A very gray, cloudy, overcast, rainy sunrise but the temps were back to normal in the mid 60's, which is tolerable, and we are supposed to see the mid 70's today, altho we are looking at a rainy day all day, with a massive summer-like system rolling in from the Gulf of Aliens.
February 23 2010 - A cloudy overcast foggy sunrise with temps in the mid 60's again...
Since we bailed last night on capturing a video of the murky overcast gray sunset, and although we captured a very similar sunrise video yesterday, since we heard a "complaint" from a family member that we seemed to be getting lacksadaisical in our videoing efforts, we trudged out into the foggy gray dawn this morning to capture a "just for the record" video. Editorial comment is that altho it was solid overcast at sunset last evening and the same this morning at sunrise, we noticed that around midnight last night that the sky had cleared and the stars were out, likely yet another example of yet another front moving in on top of an existing frontal system. At any rate, we have weather predictions of lower 80's the next couple of days to be followed by yet another cold front bringing a record plunge in temps, a wierd wacky weather year here, and elsewhere...
February 24 2010
Kind of a nondescript sunrise, but a very nice morning compared to the last few days, about 70 degrees and calm at daybreak. Supposed to get up to about 80 degrees again today, as it did yesterday, with continued chances of showers mixed in with periods of warm sunshine, which sounds like a brief sample of the upcoming spring rainy season here, although if you will note a dark cloud bank moving into the area at the end of this video, that is the very front end of a system that will bring yet another cold snap into the region, dropping temps down into the 40's and 50's again for a few days, as the weather frognostigators are also blabbering about more winter storms blitzing the northern regions...
February 25 2010. We reluctantly re-institute a temporary suspension of capturing sunrise videos until we get some warmer weather. For the record, this morning at sunrise the actual temp was around 50 degrees but the strong winds of 22 mph were gusting to over 25 mph so the "feels like" temperature in the lower 40's was rather unpleasant for subtropically acclimated residents. Since the cold front had moved the clouds out, the sky was crystal clear, so we were presented with a cloudless un-video-genic sky in addition to the brutal cold. The whether frognostigators are predicting that this new cold front will engulf us for a couple of days with low morning temps down into the 40's, so we doubt that any of our videographers are going to be amenable to getting out to capture a sunrise vid until it warms up again -- they joke that they just don't get paid enough to do that (so far, in our two years of toiling at this time consuming, expensive, thankless endeavor, we have not received even one donation to reward us for our efforts, hint hint).
February 26 2010 - Another Cold Front, Another Clear Sky...
Well, it was about 44 degrees at daybreak, but there was no breeze, no wind chill, the video guy had been up for a couple of hours and after a couple of cups of java, he decided to run out to the beach right at sunrise for the above quicky video to break the recent temporary suspension due to intolerable cold. The vid guy did comment that it wasn't that bad out there (but then he was bundled up like an Eskimo trekking to the north pole).
February 27 2010
A little warmer this morning, but still in the lower 50's, more than a little chilly, still about 15 degrees below normal for this normally nice time of the year here. This time though, another cold front is moving in today to drop temps back down into the 40's tonight so we do not get any kind of reprieve from the cold for a while...
February 28 2010. Sorry, no sunrise video today, much too cold, much too clear. Altho the temp was "up" to around 50 at daybreak, winds were gusting to 15 mph with a "feels like" in the 40's, and with a crystal clear sky our cheepo camera simply cannot handle the full sun as it breaks the horizon. Warmer weather is forecast starting tomoro, so we hope to get back out there on the first day of March, and that some spring weather arrives for us all in the near future. It's been a long, cold, cloudy, windy, dreary winter here, worst ever by far for the region, not too great "up north" either. Good riddance El Nino, come on La Nina...
