Note that we experienced the coldest, cloudiest, windiest, rainiest month of January ever here in the "Sunshine State", with records set in all categories. This highly out of the ordinary weather was attributed to an unusually strong El Nino phenomenon (warming waters in the equatorial Pacific), dropping the jet stream cold fronts further south while bringing in more warm moisture from the Pacific, with the mixture resulting in very cloudy conditions and highly unusual winter storms. So, if you view the videos and think that we have lousy "winter" weather here, we admit that it was pretty bad this winter, as it was everywhere, but we emphasize that the conditions were highly abnormal (this disclaimer for our friends in the hospitality industry down here, "encouraging" us to point this out). Our archive videos from the same time frame last year provide an interesting contrast...
January 2 2010 - First cold front of the new year dropped temps to mid 40's this morning...
January 3 2010 - Take two of two at sunrise...
January 4 2010 - Another Wind CHill Advisory, well deserved says the video guy...
The prolonged "cold spell" continues today, with temps continuing to ebb down, only 43 this morning at sunrise with wind chills in the 30's, predicted to drop to near record low of 37 tomoro morning. Discussions with "old timer" residents here results in a concensus that this seems to be the longest cold spell in memory. Usually the temps drop for about 24 hours and then it warms back up quickly, so this cold spell, predicted to last a few more days, is well out of the ordinary. Time to fly south for the winter...
January 5 2010 - No wind chill advisory this morning, but temps were even lower at 43 degrees...
We "complained" yesterday about the unusually prolonged cold spell that was then FOUR days long and was predicted to last several more days, and as a result received some "commiseration" in the form of an e-mailer pointing out that the "deep freeze arctic blast" in the rest of the nation has been parked there for the same unusually long time, and that we should be "grateful" that we are the only place in the nation where just the wind chills are not below freezing. To that, we respond that the cold is relative to the person that is feeling it, and living in this temperate region we have a tendancy for our "blood to thin out", so we can relate to the colder temps up north because to us it feels just about the same to us with this unusual cold snap down here. Anyway, temps continued their downward crawl, to about 43 this morning, with the prediction tomorow of a further drop into the 30's with only gradual warming for the next few days after that. So, the usual cold snap usually lasting only a day, or two at the most, is going to be exceeded by well over a week this time. Just noticed on the weather channel that they are referring to our extended cold spell here as "historical" in duration -- the old timers were on the money yesterday with their assessment. So, from bouts of prolonged record heat to prolonged historic cold, what a year already. There are a couple of more takes of this sunrise below this one...
January 5 2010 - Second take, closer to sunrise...
January 5 2010 - Third take, at sunrise...
January 6 2010 - Day six of the "historic" deep freeze, a "see your breath" sunrise...
Near freezing temps broke regional records at sunrise, down to 32 inland to around 37 on the coast, with winds of over 10 mph, as the wind chills pushed the "feels like" temp down into the mid to upper 20's. So, the recent wind chill advisory has changed over to a freeze warning, with a "state of emergency" declared by the governor (for the agricultural/citrus producing crowd). Well, there goes the cost of fruit and vegetables. Space heaters and fireplace logs have disappeared from the shelves locally. At least we have bright sunshine, skies are clear, should get up to 60 today. A little chilly to exercise (at speed), but nice to get out of the breeze and into the sun, strip down to a t-shirt and shorts (or less, a little topless bathing!) and soak up some vitamin D for the old immune system boost (the sunshine is very warm, stings the bare skin after only a few minutes).
January 7 2010 - Take 2 of 3
A colorful sunrise, but so much of the detail is lost thru the camera and the video host, it was so much more vivid in person -- but very cold the video guy adds, seemed like the coldest morning yet, even though a few degrees "warmer"...
January 7 2010 - Take 3 of 3
This third take was still before sunrise, as the sun "rose up out of the water" and was immediately too bright to video due to the crystal clear low humidity air (and the fact that our cheepo vid cam has no capability to use a filter)...
January 8 2010
Day 8 of the prolonged cold spell. Although temp was higher at sunrise by a few degrees and lacking the wind chill of recent mornings, it was still plenty cold. Supposed to get up to 74 today, almost normal temps, before the next wave of the cold front invades tomoro, plunging temps back down into the 30's. We will get out and enjoy the warmth today, been "cooped up" for a week now, time for a break.
January 10 2010 - Day ten of prolonged historic "deep freeze" cold spell.
At sunrise the temp was 35 degrees, winds at 18 mph, wind chill of 24 degrees. Testimony from video guy was that altho thoroughly bundled up in layers, shedding gloves to operate camera for less than one minute per take resulted in painful "burn" to the skin and significant "discomfort" penetrated to the bones and joints of the bare hands. Interesting tidbit that the high temp here today will barely make it up to the normal low temp. They tell us that we are nearing a turnaround in a day or so, finally, altho likely still equally cold tomoro, supposed to approach near normal, up into the 70's by next weekend. "Next weekend" is a long way off, and we wonder if yet another cold front might be lurking to the north to scamper down and obliterate the warmup. Guess the cold has affected our brains and we are getting coldanoid, so we will be positive and look forward to 80's for next weekend.
January 11 2010 - Day eleven of prolonged historic "deep freeze" cold spell. No sunrise video today. Temps were down to near record breaking low, maybe lower, with strong breezes, and a lovely wind chill of 25 degrees at sunrise. Supposed to get up to 60 today, nice and sunny, with warmup to continue about five degrees per day until the weekend when it should reach normal temps of about 80 degrees again. That will be a welcome relief, we are not well adjusted to the cold down here.
January 12 2010 - Day twelve of prolonged historic "deep freeze" cold spell.
Yet again, near record low, and the wind chill was again biting at sunrise, but we will have tons of sunshine today and high will be slightly above normal low temp, so can soak a little sun, maybe get some long walks and a jog or two to catch a little exercise finally, but still too chilly to bike or 'blade, as those activities increase the wind chill...
January 13 2010 - Day thirteen of prolonged historic "deep freeze" cold spell.
At sunrise, supposedly warmer than yesterday at 44 degrees and only a light breeze, it sure did not feel any warmer. On the bright side, we will have bright sun today, temperatures finally above the normal low at 67 degrees. Another good day to sit in the sun, take a short walk, and maybe in the "heat of the day" get in a little exercise.
January 14 2010 - After sunrise, a cloudy morning...
We missed the actual sunrise today, up half the night and neglected to set a wakeup alarm and missed it by almost half an hour, so the above take was a little late but gives an indication of the type of morning that it was. Although we don't like alarm clocks, we shall endeavor to avoid repeating this mistake in the future.
We commented along with yesterday's sunset video that our historic cold snap appears to be nearing it's end, and might well be officially over today. That would make it a TWO WEEk onslaught of way below normal extra cold weather. Typically, this type of cold snap lasts about two days at most. The forecast for today and the week ahead has every day topping out at near normal in the low to upper 70's, what a relief...
Anyway, yesterday almost seemed like "winter" was nearing it's departure and that spring had begun to make an appearance. It was a thoroughly delightful day. One of those extra pleasant days when there is a light blanket of high velvety clouds which produces bright but muted sunlight, ultra light breezes constantly shifting in direction, very warm but not quite hot sunshine, with cool crisp clean air, earthy fragrances drifting up from the "thawing" tundra, with aromatic scents of ocean, swamp, and subtropical barrier island, all mingling together with wispy scents of wood smoke from fireplaces. Highly reminiscent of northern regions with a late fading winter day strongly hinting of an early spring day. The kind of day that makes you want to get outside with a soft warm blanket and find a sunny spot on a grassy hillside and just watch the clouds drift by overhead -- maybe roll downhill til you get dizzy like when you were just a kid...then take a nap in the cool grass with the warm sun beating down.
January 17 2010 - Nice and warm about 73, but some windy rainy weather is moving in today...
January 18 2010 - Yesterday's cool front dropped temps to about 63 at sunrise...
January 19 2010 - Even cooler today at sunrise, down to 55, but days are sunny and warm...
January 20 2010 - Still cool at 55 degrees, with a nice brisk sunny day ahead...
January 22 2010
A murky, cloudy, humid 73 degrees at sunrise, near record heat predicted again today with a chance of afternoon showers rolling in from the north...
January 23 2010 - A turkey of a murky sunrise...
The warm front continues to dwell in the area, very cloudy at sunrise, temps again at 73 degrees at sunrise, headed for the near record mid 80's again today, humid with chance of scattered showers...
January 24 2010
Yet another murky, cloudy, humid 73 degrees at sunrise, a repeat of yesterday, daytime high temp predicted to be more near normal in upper 70's with a chance of showers. Pretty yucky weather for January, usually sunny and warm this time of year, feels more like the transitional weather that normally occurs in November...
January 25 2010 - No sunrise video today. Continued cloudy, very overcast at sunrise. Video guy said he looked out the window, flipped a mental coin, and it came up tails, so he got his tail back under the covers to sleep in. I think it was the late night football and celebrating that two of his three favorite NFL teams made it to Super Bowl XLIV in nearby Landshark stadium. For the record, the temps were about the same, not much change at all in the last few murky days...
January 26 2010
A cold front moved in overnight, displacing the clouds with a clear cold sky, temperature dropped 26 degrees from yesterday morning, probably back down to the "near record" cold level again. Anyway, supposed to warm up to the lower 70's with bright sunshine, so it will be a cheery day to get out and about and finally get some vitamin D and exercise.
January 27 2010 - No sunrise video today. Opposite "problem" of two days ago, with a complete absence of clouds this morning at sunup, and with crystal clear air the sun was just to bright to video the sunrise. But, although cool at 50 degrees, it was calm and fairly nice, still a good way to start the day, walking the beach at sunrise on a brisk morning. High temp is only going to make it into the lower 70's today, but should be a nice warm sunshine to enable soaking up a little vitamin D. A warmup is forecast over the next few days, making it back up to 80. Starting to look more like normal January weather here as we approach February...
January 28 2010
At sunrise the temp was 68, headed up into the mid 70's today, mostly sunny, warming up further into the weekend but with chances of showers...
January 29 2010 - As with the last two sunsets, sunrise was very similar to yesterday...
January 30 2010 - Breezy, warm, humid at sunrise, chance of showers later today with high temps...
TIP: Today, Saturday, January 30th will see the brightest full moon of 2010, and as a bonus in the eastern sky, the planet Mars will be hovering to the right of the full moon as a bright star with a reddish tint also at it's close-igee orbit, with Sirius to the right of Mars. Be sure to get out and howl at the bright full moon, reddish Mars, and the always weirdly colorful Sirius (we wonder if those reds and greens and blues are from neon signs on Sirius, seriously)...
January 31 2010 - Pro Bowl Sunday at nearby Sun Life stadium, gettin ready for Super Bowl...
Weather continues to be murky with clouds, off and on sunshine predicted later, fairly warm about 70 at sunrise but not supposed to get a lot warmer today, may be some showers with thunder later but nothing serious, bad storms did not get this far south with this latest frontal system. As January fades away, we have to note that this month has not been the usual nice weather of past years, but then it has been pretty lousy everywhere, likely due to the El Nino effect.
Looking back at the archive videos for January of last year (link to first half of Jan 09) (link to second half of Jan 09), there were zero days with "murky" sunrises like today, and there were only two sunrises that were mostly cloudy. Compare that with seven murky cloud-outs this January, with a couple more sunrises where fronts were moving in to produce cloudy mornings, along with several more that were mostly cloudy, including a rain-out. The local chamber of commerce bobble-heads would like us to point out that all of this cold cloudy weather is way out of the ordinary for "the sunshine state"...
