Happy Independence Day! An interesting little known factoid. Tuesday, July 2nd, 1776 was the actual day that the founding fathers finally first voted for independence (12 colonies voted for independence, with the New York Tories abstaining). Very little occurred on the fourth of July, as it was stated to be a "day off". The public celebration of the declaration of independence transpired on Monday July 8th, and the actual signings of the document did not begin until August the second (source: "John Adams" by McCollough). So, let's celebrate July 4th as a "day off", somewhere in the midst of the whole independence thing...

July 8th, 2009 - Finally, the actual sun at sunrise, well, a little afterwards anyway...

With the prolonged absence of the cooling effect of ocean breezes comes "warmer" weather. Yesterday saw a record breaking 97 degrees, for that date in history, recorded for Fort Lauderdale (at the asphalt-laden, way-inland airport, so it was actually a few degrees cooler than that here on the beach...), and today could be another record setter. Yep, feels way too much like August in July. Followup: no records broken this day, as westerly winds brought cooling afternoon thunderstorms into our area to keep the temps down.

July 8th, 2009 - The August "doldrums" in July

This year the months of June and July have seemed much more like the middle of August when the becalmed period of time referred to as "the doldrums" sets in for a week or two. Very unusual, must be an effect of the El Niño although we do not recall prior El Niños being like this... Anyone out there know what is going on with the absence of the ocean breezes? One response: among other factors, basic ocean winds (and consequently ocean waves) are normally generated from planet Earth's easterly rotation, but the El Nino creates a consistent westerly air movement north of the Equator, offsetting the basic prevailing wind creation factor, resulting in air stagnation most of the time...(?)

NOAA today finally announced the official arrival of El Niño. They expect this El Niño to continue developing during the next several months, with further strengthening possible. The event is expected to last through winter 2009-10. Click on this link if you would like to peruse NOAA's statement and some info about the global repercussions of El Niño.

July 10th, 2009 - Finally an ocean breeze, with a "light chop", and a storm moving in...

July 12th, 2009 - Thunder cloud having a "bad hair day" (wind shear from El Nino?)....

July 19th, 2009 - Sunrise was behind heavy clouds this morning, but a nice cool breeze...

July 20th, 2009 - Nice ocean breeze again, more like July, but a little cool actually...

Another heavy cloud bank over the gulf stream again, so the sun did not appear until well after sunrise and also not much color between dawn and sunrise, making for another unspectacular sunup...

July 21st, 2009 - Nice, cool morning, still not windy, but we have a little wave action today...

July 23rd, 2009 - Just a light breeze off the ocean...

July 24th, 2009 - A light chop on the big pond, but still very calm for this time of year...

July 28th, 2009 - There is no Joy at the Walkabout -- oh, we're happy, just not Joyous...

Storm clouds over the gulf stream this morning, kept it cool for an hour or two, but the system moved out to sea and twas soon back to being sunny and hot, but that's the way we like it....

July 29th, 2009 -- A "pesky trough" is keeping heavy clouds on the horizon at sunsrise...

July 30th, 2009 - A gray grey dawn, heavy clouds again...

July 31st, 2009

Some waves for a change, with a nice strong ocean breeze, and even a little color for the last sunrise of July...
