June 5th, 2009 - Stormy weather. We experienced an official rain-out this morning, which is not necessarily a showstopper, but there were some hints of thunder and lightning with the rain, and the video guy indicates that he has been struck by lightning way too many times already (I can believe that...). It did clear off for a while later this morning, even managed a "daily" broadwalk run, but the afternoon brought tropical-stormish winds over 6o mph along with up to seven inches of rain and flooding up and down the coast.

The "twittering" that you hear in the background on this video (and others for the last month or so) is from the migrating Arctic terns that come on the scene here in May and June, when the area is almost devoid of sea gulls. These small agile birds not only fly relatively fast, but they also perform considerable "dive bombing" maneuvers into the surf to harvest their meals...

June 20th, 2009 - still becalmed (rendered motionless for lack of wind)
The entire month of June has been exceptionally mild this year. May is usually the calm and quiet month, but this year May was very stormy with record setting rainfalls and consistently high winds. Definite changes in the weather patterns.....

Major storms here this morning, since before sunrise, and the "disturbed system", as The Weather Channel referred to it, took several hours to pass through the area. And our "disturbed" video guy snuck out with his umbrella (a virtual lightning rod) at sunrise to capture the above video, which is not too great due to the dark graininess, but does show a lightning storm that has just passed to the south, so we thought we should post it for your perusal... The next video below is of the radar map of the storm, albeit a little later in the morning, with the bottom tip of the storm being what was passing through here at sunrise -- a big system, warnings in effect until 3 pm today...
A video of the weather radar map of the "disturbed system" from the video above it for June 23rd... The directional cones indicate not only the direction of the more intense pockets of the storm, but the length of the cone indicates how fast it is moving (the cones are projected purely on wind speed and direction). Typically, the cones in a system are much shorter indicating slower movement and are usually all pointing in the same direction, and when they point in all directions like this, that indicates a severely "disturbed" system. The next video below shows a looping lightning strikes map of the same storm, and our location is just about in the middle of the lower mass of yellow strikes (yellow indicates more recent, fading to orange then red as least recent...). A link to this excellent lightning strikes map may be found on the "Tips" page of this site (it only covers the state of Florida tho) by clicking on this link...

We should point out that altho the video camera held up ok this morning, that there were no other significant takes captured, as, perplexingly, the above take was at the point of maximum color, even though the clouds were quite extraordinary - we did capture a later take at the time of actual sunrise, but the sun was mostly obscured. Not much color, but all in all, a very nice calm peaceful sunrise...
June 28th, 2009
A second straight morning of great cloud formations which would typically result in an extraordinary sunrise, but there was not much color at all, and the sun was blocked out by too many clouds out in the Atlantic, as a major storm system remains off the coast to the northeast...
June 29th, 2009 - As good as it got, heavy cloud system on horizon again...
June 30th, 2009 - Yet another lackluster sunrise due to heavy cloud system on horizon...
