November 3rd - No sunrise video today, overslept due to Monday nite football and few too many celebratory beers. Going to be another hot one here today, we must admit we are looking forward to slightly cooler weather supposedly headed this way in a day or two. It has been a loooong hot summer here, well into the fall season. No doubt we will be complaining about the cold weather when it gets here, having to put on socks, shoes, multiple layers, sweats -- that will be weird after months of sandals, shorts, and light t-shirts. Time for a "mean season" ending skinny-dip under the waning full moon tonight -- if the sharks don't get us, we will be back tomorrow morning with a sunrise video...

November 4th, 2009 - Mornings are a little cooler, but we are still having some extra warm days...

November 5th, 2009 - Our first Nor'easter blows in...

We captured this video from the shelter of a North Beach motel after giving up on other locations where the video guy was unable to hold the camera steady due to consistent gusting of the winds (he didn't do too well there either). He speculated that the winds were about 25 mph likely reaching near tropical storm strength (34 mph). Speaking of tropical storms, Ida just reached hurricane strength and appears headed north for the Gulf Coast -- it is still hurricane season and the gulf waters are warm, and the last three letters in Florida are 'ida'...

November 6th. We have cooler weather but no sunrise video today. The effort to capture a video was attempted, but there was a huge gray wall of solid clouds out over the gulf stream and we continue to have 20 to 30 mph winds, so we turned around and came back to warm covers (lower 70's, but with the wind chill it felt like the 60's, not used to that yet) rather than post a bland sunrise video with wind noise. We hope to fare better tomorrow, even though it is supposed to still be cool and windy, maybe the clouds will cooperate...

November 7th, 2009 - Still windy, still cool, but a much better sunrise than yesterday...

The Nor'easter continues to hammer away at the beach with 20 to 30 mph winds, and is predicted to continue for another day or two, at which time we are supposed to get hammered with winds from hopefully fading tropical storm Ida, which is taking the same track as hurricane Wilma in '05 that knocked out electrical power here for weeks and resulted in nightly outdoor post-hurricane parties around bonfires in the pitch black darkness. Ahh, that was a good time, so many stars, so many beers, so many, um, well, it was good...

November 8th. Just like two days ago, the "sunrise", or lack of one, this morning was blocked by a huge solid wall of clouds to the east, and of course the wind was still blowing at 25 to 35 mph, so along with being a little cool we didn't even go outside this morning, and slept in (a tough Saturday night here). Winds were gusting to tropical storm force on this day, with double red flags prohibiting ocean swimming. Sunset was not much better on this day but we did/will post a video over there, altho we are not sure why, as the clouds were still in abundance and it was yet another fade to gray sunset... Take that, Chamber of Commerce.

November 9th. Ditto yesterday, same windy, dark, lackluster sunrise with the sun not "rising" out of the clouds until about mid-morning, so no video again. For anyone unfamiliar with south Florida, for about a week or so around mid November, we encounter "transitional" weather like this with constant strong winds, lots of cloud cover, consequently cool, with a few showers, leading into normal weather for the late fall season of nice warm sunny weather with a few early cold fronts making it down this far from the north. However, this year the winds were notably stronger and longer than ever before -- we sometimes get and inch or two of "sand drifts" on the broadwalk and Surf Road, but we now have sand a foot deep in places, palm fronds, sticks, and tons of sea grape leaves strewn all over the place, looks more like the aftermath of a tropical storm.

November 10th, 2009

Finally, a fairly normal sunrise, but still having strong winds, with some unavoidable wind noise. The winds are shifting though, from the northeast to a more easterly direction, a good indication that the high pressure system that these winds are circling around is finally moving, should see some changes in a day or two...

November 11th, 2009

Finally getting back to normal here, still windy but the strong breeze is now directly out of the south, supposed to swing around to the northwest soon, at which point it should look like a normal mid November by then, altho we are in for a cool down this weekend, dropping from the mid 80's for highs down into the upper 50's for overnight lows. Now if they can just remove the debris from the week long no-name tropical storm off of the broadwalk and Surf Road...

November 12th, 2009 - Finally, back to normal, now for some cool weather...

To the left in this mornings video is the very front end of a cloud mass that is bringing in the cool front for this weekend. Thirty minutes earlier the sky was pretty much clear in the east and the front was just showing up to the north (left)...

November 13th, 2009 - Friday the 13th dawns cool and calm ...

Another morning with thick dark clouds on the horizon that would block the early sunrise, and when the sun did appear over the brick wall it would be too bright to video. Cool this morning with a low of 59 but the breeze finally diminished, turned out to be one of the crisp clear early fall-like days here with lots of warm sunshine, even had the pungent fragrances of fall that had drifted down with yesterday's frontal system from the north.

November 14th, 2009 - Another chilly morning...

The thick wall of horizon clouds finally has turned into scattered clouds more favorable for videos. About as cool as yesterday with a low of 60 at sunrise, and another terrific day with low dew points, warm sunshine, and a cool breeze. A good day to get out, but the trouble with that is that all the other locals will get out too, it'll be crowded on the broadwalk with inlanders and bar hoppers and wacko loco locals -- we will try to enjoy it, at least the snowbird tourists are still up north, one less element of the obstacle debacle to deal with...

November 15th, 2009 - Waves without wind on another cool morning, about 63 degrees...

November 16th, 2009 - Sand castle reverting to beach sand, but it had it's moment...

A very erie sky at sunrise, and that "glow" on the horizon is not the actual sun, which in fact never actually broke through the clouds, just glowed. As usual though, it cleared off and was a sunny day, high of about 80 degrees, nice time of year here, the "tween season", which is after the "mean season", and before the snowbird season...

We have observed for some time that high tides seem to be steadily washing further up the beach and the last few days it has been washing up to the "sea wall" that borders the broadwalk, as well as some beachfront homes and motels. Of course, that has nothing to do with non-existent rising sea levels, just because all those glaciers, ice fields, and the polar ice caps are melting. Juzt has to be somethin goin haywire with the danged tides bein off fer a while, probly dew to dat dare el neenyoyo thing out dare in the Specific oshun (a little "gw-speak")...

November 17th, 2009 - At dawn, too many clouds for Leonid meteor shower but still saw a few...

November 18th, 2009

This mornings sunrise was very similar to yesterday's, in fact the video guy captured a video at daybreak that looked almost exactly like the video that we posted yesterday, very unusual for that type of cloud formation to be present two days in a row. Anyway, still nice weather here, high temps edging back up to mid 80s, down to about 70 at night, cool gentle breezes, warm sun, very pleasant...

November 25th, 2009
There was a light rain at daybreak, the video guy had to take several clips before he could get one without a raindrop or two hitting the lens and obscuring the view. Shortly after this video, thunder rolled in bringing thunderous lightning bolts with it, power outages and all day rain, with occasional deluges and strong winds. Seemed more like a mid summer storm -- not that we don't have some inclement weather here during the transitional part of November, but it has never been observed to be of a tropical like nature, more like cool, cloudy, misty weather. But this year has been very weird in many aspects...

November 26th, 2009
A nice but slightly cool morning, finally seeing a short break in the overnight rains that continued from yesterday afternoon, altho toward the end of the above video, the dark cloud mass off to the south is another storm system that was coming off the 'glades. It did finally clear up later in the day, was fairly nice, got up into the low 80's, with the front end of a cold front pushing into the area, bringing with it earthy fragrances of late fall from up north, along with the pleasant aroma of wood smoke.

November 27th, 2009

The top string of clouds at a slanted angle to the horizon is the tail end of clouds that moved in with the cold front last night. It did make it down to 55 at sunrise, with supposedly only 10 mph winds, but the vid guy said it was more like 15 mph and that it was bursting, not gusting, for prolonged periods of time at what seemed like at least 20 mph, such that some takes were bypassed due to the camera movement from getting blown around, plus the wind noise of course. All in all, he came back in shivering, even though he had on three layers of clothes. It is now officially chilly season here, and maybe chili season also tonight (time to make some chili or hot soup), as it is supposed to be another 5 degrees colder overnight tonight. Nice day today tho, the air was so crisp and clean that the glare from the sunlight required the darkest of sunglasses, and even then...

November 28th, 2009

The temps at sunrise went even further down than yesterday to the predicted 50 degree mark, and altho the "breeze" went down a few MPH the "feels like" temp was about the same, which was tooo chilly for the video guy (he looked more like someone going snowmobiling than strolling out to the beach to video the sunrise). The vid guy just reminded me that the 50 degrees temp was inland at the airport concrete jungle and that the actual temp here on the sandy vegetated beach it is usually 3 to 5 degrees colder (fine, but he was still dressed like an Eskimo going Palin hunting)...

November 29th, 2009

It appears that we have finally emerged from the transitional weather that signals the end of warmer weather and the start of the cool weather season. It came late this year, and actually there seemed to be two occurrences of it, almost like we experienced what is termed "Indian Summer" after the initial cool down. Anyway, the weather is pretty nice now, with low humidity and highs in the low 80's and lows in the mid 60's.
