October 1st, 2009 - Just "for the record", the cloudy cool front that moved in last evening at sunset resulted in densely solid cloud cover this morning, with a low temp of about 72, so we did not venture out to even attempt a sunrise video, just jumped back in bed and enjoyed a little more sleep on this cool fall-like morning...
October 2nd, 2009 - A Sunrise Shower over the Gulf Stream
Second take, a little earlier -- the video is a little grainy due to darkness (and cheepo camera), but in person the contrast was vivid...
October 2nd, 2009
Finally feels like fall, such as it is here... Except for an occasional cool front coming down out of the north, the hi/lo temps are about five degrees below the usual summer "mean season" temps, still plenty warm but not too cool, "just right" as Goldilocks would say. An article in the local newspaper today indicated that due to the El Nino effect (which results in the "jet stream" residing further south) we will see cooler, wetter, and stormier winter months here, and even mentioned the possibility of tornados.
October 3rd, 2009
So much for the cool dry spell, back up to the low 90's this weekend, sunny with high humididity, but better than those upcoming "cold snaps". Average high temp for this locale on this date is 87 degrees. Full moon, nice weather, so the beach will be crazy this weekend -- time to get out and watch the loco locals get wacky before the plague of tourists and cold weather invade our paradise this Fall...
October 4th, 2009 - Nice and calm, good morning for taking a dip in the ocean...
October 5th, 2009 - A fairly strong breeze for a change, a not so flat ocean today...
October 6th, 2009 - Feathery clouds overhead for a calm breeze-less sunrise...
October 7th, 2009
Nice and calm and warm and humid, good morning for swimmers and no-see-ums, not so good for the video guy. Near record heat predicted for today -- a little "climate warming"? Hopefully the heat will kick up an ocean breeze later today to blow the humididity around...
October 8th, 2009 - Another breeze-less sunrise with a flat ocean...
October 9th, 2009 - A breeze at dawn, finally, but it is still above average temps and warm...
October 9th, 2009 - A second take at sunrise...
October 10th, 2009 - Still a little breeze, still a little warm, still niiiiice...
October 11th, 2009 - Take one before sunrise...
We have noticed just in the last day or two that ospreys are beginning to appear at sunrise, after a summer long absence, and we are uncertain as to why they only "go fishing" oceanside in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. We also have observed some increased osprey activity lately at sunset over the swamp (where they nest), whereas they were rarely seen over there even in the summer months. Guess we need to look into that, unless someone out there knows all about the habits of the "Florida eagle"...
An interesting statistic on the number of years between the last four El Nino's. This year, 2009/2010, with the prior El Nino occuring in 2006/7, before that 2002/3, and before that 1997/98. So the progression going backwards is 3, 4, and 5 years. So the last two El Nino's have occurred one year sooner than the prior one (in case you were wondering, going back in time before 1997 the number of years between each El Nino was five years). Note that the dominant causation feature of an El Nino is a warming of the Pacific ocean equatorial surface temperatures, with the effect being warmer winters in the northern hemisphere. And, yes, the opposite effect, La Nina, ocean cooling, has begun to occur less frequently with less lowering of temps (despite glaciers and polar ice caps melting), while the more frequent El Nino's have higher and higher temps. This all adds up to more "warming", and now more frequently. "Theoretically", looking ahead based on the above noted progression, we will have only two years until the next El Nino following this one, and then they should occur every year, or all the time (they last for a year). Shouldn't this be on the "news"? Are we the first to notice this? Heck no, "Big Media" has been told to keep it quiet -- we got more important things to deal with, like the site of the 2016 olympics. We live in "The Age of Stupid" (there is a documentary out now with that title, about global climate change).
October 11th, 2009 - Take two at sunrise...
October 12th, 2009 - A little ocean breeze, about 80 degrees, nice...
October 13th, 2009 - Another nice breeze at sunrise...
October 14th, 2009 - Another breezy sunrise and a little cool, but will be a warm day they say...
October 15th, 2009 - Nice and calm, but headed for another record breaking high temp around 90 today...
Note that as predicted, we would set a record high temperature for this day of 91 degrees, while also setting a second record of eleven straight days of 90 degrees or above during the month of October (climate warming?). The same temp of 91 is predicted again for tomorrow, but the weekend finally is supposed to be our first real cool down of the fall season with lows predicted in the 60's -- time to get out the socks and shoes and sweatshirts...
October 16th, 2009
Another calm sunrise, a little warm but nice, headed for 12th straight day of record breaking high temperature of 90 today, before we plunge into fall like temps this weekend in the mid to low sixties, which we admit will be a welcome relief after this October heat wave that is more like July weather...
October 17th, 2009 - Sunbeams at Sunrise...
Finally a cool down from the record breaking 12 day string of temps in the 90's, with the predicted high here today "only" 83 degrees, but with overnight lows into the sixties. We will take it without complaint, got a little tired of summer temperatures and humidity in early fall...
October 18th, 2009 - A local climate change from record heat to record cold...
Last evening's cool front dropped the overnight temps down to a record of 56 degrees - after 12 straight days of record temps in the 90's. Time for us to fly south for the winter...
October 19th, 2009. The temperature at sunrise was about 56 degrees, with a strong breeze giving us locals an uncomfortable real-feel "wind chill" of about 50. We arose before sunrise, stepped outside at about the time the color usually starts to come on, predicted an unspectacular sunrise (due to a sollid wall of clouds in the east), and confess that we jumped back under the still-warm covers and enjoyed a little sleep-in. We just have not re-acclimated to this sudden drop of temperatures by almost 40 degrees from the recent record string of summer-like highs in the 90's. The recorded low temperatures for this morning were generally in agreement at about 56 degrees, a few degrees above the record for this date, but about 15 degrees below average (and about 25 degrees below what it has been up until a couple of days ago), which is where the weather prognosticators predict we will be back up to by tomoro morning, so we should be able to stand the chill to capture a video at sunrise.
October 20th, 2009 - Before Sunrise (first of three takes this morning)
A little warmer this morning than the last couple of sunrises. Back to normal high and low temps for a few days, up to mid 80's, down to around 70, nice at night, breezy during the day, but we will take it...
October 20th, 2009 - Take two, at Sunrise
Just like we started noticing some increase in the oceanside activity of ospreys last week, in the last day or two we have observed a sandpiper or two here and there, so it would seem that they may be coming back also -- we are pretty sure that the sandpipers migrate out of the area in the summer months...
October 20th, 2009 - Take three after Sunrise
After bugging the video guy a little (who me? nag?), he has agreed to venture out a little more often and video sunrises and sunsets from different locations rather than just stumble out to our naked little sandy beach with no foliage and no palm trees...
October 21st, 2009 - The recent ocean breeze has turned into winds of 15 to 25 mph...
October 22nd, 2009 - Strong breezes continue along with normal warmth for this time of year here...
October 23rd, 2009 - Lots of ospreys out this morning, also starting to see pelicans migrate back in...
October 24th, 2009
October 25th, 2009
The mass of clouds out over the gulf stream is said to be a low pressure system that is going to blow in some showers today and pushing temperatures back up to summer-like low 90's for the next few days -- another fall "heat wave", and we will take it, as it was just a little chilly out there this morning, about 73...
The month of October was the hottest, driest October ever recorded for the region. And don't tell anyone but WE saw the highest high tide here on the intracoastal waterway during the month of October than ever before -- the water was actually coming up through the planks in the waterway boardwalk at low points. You won't hear anything about that from the big media bobble-heads though, as they are paid off by big business, real estate firms, and of course the chamber of commerce to keep it all quiet.

October 31st, 2009 - Trick or Treat in the Heat
Of course that "extra" water has nothing to do with the the polar ice caps melting, nor with the Greenland and Iceland ice sheets melting, nor the meltdown of the Kilimanjaro and K2 ice fields, nor with all of the planet's glaciers melting, nor with existing sea water thermal expansion due to higher temperatures which are due to increasing record levels of human-made pollutants in the atmosphere trapping the planet's heat. Nope, can't be any of those silly little ole things. Heck there isn't really an "global warming" at all according to the "Big Deniers", just because the planet's temperature is increasing, it'll start going down again, someday, after we are all living up in the mountains, close to the seashore at the foot of the mountains. We even noted one Big Denier comment that even if everything does melt, then all the sea life will die from the toxins we are dumping in the oceans and that will make plenty of room for the melt water, heck the water levels may even go down...
By the way, having mentioned Iceland, we hear that they are thinking of renaming it soon to No-iceland, or Iceless-land, or Iceallgone-land, or Whuthappendtoduhice-land. Hey, seriously, do a search on "rising sea levels map" for some very interesting information, especially if you or someone you know lives or owns property in a low lying coastal area. Here we all come Montana!
