Sunset Archive for December 2009

December 1st, 2009

Just another nice day here, mild, pleasant temps, a little breeze, but we are noticing the initial adverse affects of that upcoming plague, the invasion by northern "snowbirds", as we went inland and vehicular traffic was much more noticeably dense (as were the extra drivers), and the checkout lines in stores were significantly longer with characters easily identifiable as cranky tourists complaining that "back home in Joisy" checkout lines moved faster where people aren't so #@$&% laid back...

December 3rd, 2009

The local yocal weather dogs finally hit on predicting record high temps today, as it hit not just a high for the date, but also for the entire month of December - we will not mention that this has any connection with global warming, nor does the recently observed record high tides, nor does the beach washing away, nor...

December 4th, 2009 - A nice day today, not as stormy as they predicted...

December 5th, 2009

The morning was nice, even tho we were under a tornado watch here locally, but about noon another front moved through, rain set in for most of the afternoon, then the temperatures started to drop about sunset, got downright chilly, The dense gray cloud mass of the front was still moving through at sunset, but we captured the above short clip, "just for the record"...

December 6th, 2009 - Another "just for the record" take...

If this sunset video looks a lot like yesterday's, that's because the weather has not changed very much in the last 24 hours. But, the forecasters indicate that this cool cloudy windy wet weather will soon move out, to be replaced by what preceded it, which is warm and sunny with near record high temps for the next week or so...

December 7th, 2009 - Back to normal, with near record high temps today...

December 8th, 2009 - Near record high temps today, but again not quite...

December 9th, 2009

The high temperature here in Sofla today reached 87 degrees, yet another new record in the consistently ten degrees above normal onslaught of high temps of late.

December 10th, 2009 - Sunset Oceanside

The high temperature here in Sofla reached 89 degrees today, yet another new record in the consistently ten degrees above normal onslaught of high temps of late.

December 11th, 2009 - Another cool, cloudy, windy day, with a record high...

Even though a cool front has brought clouds and winds and has dropped the ten degrees above normal temps down to the level of near normalcy with a high of only 80, that was still a record high for the date. Even so, we consider this to be lousy weather -- altho, we should not complain about the weather, as we can still get out with minimal clothing while northerners must dress for sub zero wind chills and get stranded in blizzards on interstates overnight, that kind of stuff. Yeh, no more moaning about cloudy cool weather here...until it gets really cold.

December 12th, 2009 - No video due to highly inclement weather this evening...

At five pm, half an hour before sunset, we have rains blowing in off of the ocean and completely overcast skies, so we have decided not to attempt to venture out to capture a video that will look even darker and drearier than the one that we captured last evening. Although the weather was fairly lousy at sunrise and at sunset, we did have dry spells with some sunshine breaking through, although windy conditions prevailed throughout the day, very reminiscent of a stormy spring day with breaks in the cloudiness... And tomorrow, the prognosticators say that a warm front is moving in from the south and we will be back up into the range of record breaking heat yet again, which is beginning to seem normal here...

December 13th, 2009

The high temperature here in Sofla generally reached about 85 degrees today, not sure if that was another new record or not, but it felt warmer than that with the high humidity and only mild ocean breezes. Very summer-like, and we like it.

December 14th, 2009 - The usual of late, near record heat today, but nice...

December 15th, 2009 - The usual of late, near record heat today, but nice...

December 16th, 2009 - Evening storms rolling off of the glades...

For the last five days, since the previous "cool front" dissipated, the daily high temps have been one to two degrees just below the record high temps and eight to nine degrees above normal. Seems to be a repetitive cycle of late, two days of cool stormy weather with still above normal temps, followed by five days of warm sunny near record heat, then repeat...

December 17th, 2009 - A good day for ducks...

A little rain at sunset, followed shortly thereafter with "severe" storms that would continue through the night, with heavy rains, strong winds, and lightning, feeling a lot like a tropical storm...

December 18th, 2009 - Stormy to the south, still windy here, "a light chop on the intracoastal"...

Another blustery evening, and although the area was flooded today from last nights 14 inch deluge of rain, we were spared a repeat -- but at the start of the above video, looking south down into the Miami area is a stormy system similar to the one that battered us last night, extending all the way back into the gulf past Key west and passing over Miami out into the Atlantic. It stayed south due to a cold front moving into the area from the north, time for a cool down from the near record summer like heat of late...

December 19th, 2009 - Popcorn clouds, take 2
As indicated in first take, the light just faded to gray at official time of sunset. The "bird" that you hear calling in this video is an osprey, also known as the "sea eagle" -- they nest across the waterway in the taller trees in the mangrove swamp, and are often seen in the sunrise videos "fishing" for breakfast fillets...

December 20th, 2009 - A cold north wind precedes the winter solstice...

December 21st, 2009 - A cloudy Winter Solstice sunset, just for the record...
It was uncharacteristically mostly cloudy here today, and at sunset we were cloud-locked with solid gray overcast skies. Also, it was a chilly day here as the high temp was only in the 60's. Not the best of weather, NOOA blames it on El Nino, along with the record shattering torrential downpours of over a foot of rain last week (in one day)...

December 22nd. No sunset video this evening. It was finally a fairly decent sunset, but we were unexpectedly away from home without enough time to call in a backup videographer. Some days are like that. Was still pretty cloudy today, but with some sunshine, and the temps were still a few degrees below normal, but much more tolerable than the recent cold snap.

December 23rd, 2009 - A little less cloudy today, a little warmer, about normal...

December 24th, 2009 - First take, before sunset...

December 24th, 2009 - Second take, after Sunset...

December 25th, 2009 - A chilly north wind this evening, but twas a nice sunny warm day about 80...

December 26th, 2009 - Nice day, sunny, up into the upper 70's...

December 27th, 2009 - The weather was a little too nice today, resulted in waaay too many locals out and about, very crowded, and the locals were crazy, a.k.a. "loco locals"...

December 28th, 2009
No clouds, crystal clear sky, makes for a relatively plain sunset, with the sun so bright that it can neither be viewed with the naked eye nor videod until after it sinks below the horizon, but we captured a short take anyway, just for the record. Speaking of which, a very chill day here, only up to around sixty degrees, but twas nothing but pure sunshine, not a bad day at all, kind of a nice change...

December 29th, 2009
Same situation at sunset as yesterday, no clouds, crystal clear sky, so rather than repeat yesterdays' video, we went oceanside, altho it was not all that spectacular either -- but, some palm trees and a near full moon is better than a too bright sunset over the intracoastal. It was a nice warm day here when in the sun and out of the wind, but cold when in the shade and in the wind -- high was only in the upper sixties today, but it will warm up tomoro...

December 31st, '09 - Last sunset of the "ought" years...

They "ought" to have been better. But, guess they were pretty good years for Wall Streeters, Big Bankers, Big Pharma, Big Med, and the bureaucratic Big Business industrial complex -- the rich got richer and the rest of us got...explicative deleted... For any of the younger crowd, "ought" is terminology from the "old days" used to mean zero, and is a spelling variant of "aught", which in turn is related to "naught" which generally means "nothing" or "zero", corresponding to the leftmost zero in the '00' through '09' years of the "ought" decade (we are aware that the official calendrical end of decade is not until the end of this year, but for historical reference purposes a decade encompasses the 'x0' through 'x9' years...).

As '09 comes to a close, we have posted a "year in review" summary. If interested in perusing what we feel were significant events here locally, just click on this link.
