February 01 2010 - Another highly unusual day here today for this time of year, normally our sunny "dry season" -- not only was there not even a hint of sunshine, but it rained all day long, unusual even during the spring "rainy season". A rain producing machine is just sitting out there in the gulf unloading an incessant deluge on the area. Some localities exceeded six inches of rain just during the daytime hours, resulting in street flooding. Although sunset was not as stormy as sunrise, the video guy refused to get out and get soaked again like he did this morning, besides which it was pretty dark from dense overcast clouds anyway. Welcome to Miami all you Super Bowl-ers, hopefully this weather will be cleared out by the weekend...
February 02 2010
Finally a somewhat normal January day weather wise. The overcast skies, rains, and winds have departed, back to the calm, sunny, warm, dry season stuff, up to mid 70's today, although we did have a downpour just before sunset, with the air strangely bearing the fragrances of a summer rain...
February 03 2010
Twas a nice day, breezy, mostly/partly sunny, warm/cool, temps up into the mid 70's, nice seasonal weather for a change...
February 04 2010 - A warm and breezy day today, got up to the mid 70's...
February 06 2010
A lovely day today, although a little windier than desired, and although a little cooler than might be considered idyllic, it was nice and sunny, plenty of warmth in the sunshine, leaves blowing around like it was an early fall day, with the fragrance of woodsmoke in the air (yes, the locals had their fireplaces going and were also burning wood in the local parks), so we had a nice fall like day in the middel of winter. Much better than the two to three feet snowstorm/blizzard up north just a little ways. Looks like a good day tomoro for the super bowl.
February 07 2010 - Super Bowl Sunday! The mental coin toss came up tails on the decision of whether to video the sunset or to head out to a Super Bowl party, so no sunset video this day, as the sky is crystal clear with zero clouds anyway so the horizon is not very video-genic. It was another very lovely day today, the wind laid somewhat, but the cool front kept temps in the mid to lower 60's and it felt much cooler than that, a good day to stay inside and watch all the pre-game hype, as it likely was the same up the eastern seaboard with the two to three feet of snow...
February 09 2010 - Just for the record, another cloudy cold front moving in...
At the time of the sunset, a storm front was coming at us off of the Everglades, with dark clouds, high winds, and a sprinkling of rain.
February 10 2010 - Clouds moved out, cold front remains, a very chilly day, a cold night ahead...
February 11 2010 - A little warmer, but still chilly with high temp around 70 today...
February 12 2010 - Rare "whitecaps" on the intracoastal waterway...
There is a phrase that the NWS uses, "a light chop on the intracoastal waterway", that describes the conditions this evening to some extent, but there is a better description more fitting for this unusual occurrence of choppy waves on the waterway, that of "whitecaps on the ocean" where Jimmy Buffett sings that "it's time to close the shutters, time to go inside" because there is a storm coming, in this case a "severe thunderstorm warning" from a rather strong storm front moving in from over the Everglades that would bring in some out of the ordinary summer like storms within the hour, at about the official time of sunset which would produce rather unpleasant conditions in which to attempt to capture a video. So, we give you this video, a little before the onslaught, well before actual sunset, as the front end of the clouds from the storm have moved into the area. Quite abnormal for this time of year, but quite in line with the unusual weather conditions of the last year or so. Frankly, we locals are getting tired of the incessant wind, clouds, and cold; but, as we check out the northern storms, we do feel fortunate...
February 13 2010. A "just for the record" clip on a crystal clear evening. We experienced a brutally cold day here today, although very sunny, the temps hovered in the mid 50's and the strong breeze made the "feels like" temp nearer to the 40's. Many old timers claim that this has been the coldest, cloudiest, breeziest winter here that they can recall, adding that it follows the hottest and WEIRDEST spring, summer, and fall that they have ever seen...
February 15 2010 - The "daily" cold front moves in...
February 16 2010 - A Tow Job Sunset...
Ok, this is Tuesday, and the temps today were quite chilly with a breif high in the low 60's, so we are still in the throes of a recent cold front that moved into the area that has not yet had time to move out and we have yet another cold(er) front moving in tonight to drop the temps into the low 40's again, a repeat of Sunday, which was a repeat of Friday, and so on backwards for how long we can't remember. Global cooling? No, just a cold winter from a stronger than normal El Nino (caused by warmer than ever water temps in the equatorial Pacific), which proves out with the typical extra cold and "moisture" in the midwestern, southern, and eastern U.S., and warmer temps and less moisture along the western seaboard of the U.S. (standard with El Ninos), all of which has been evident from the "Snowmageddon" news stories in the midwest, south, and east along with the reports from the northwest where the Winter Olympics are seeing higher than normal temps with the trees blooming already and melting snow such that they are trucking in tons of the white stuff. Take that dose of reality you climate change deniers, and stop hypocritically ho-ho-hoing about what is simply the normal effects of a strong El Nino phenomenon coupled with blocked Atlantic highs which are caused by cooler water temperatures from the ice melt of the ice sheets and glaciers in nearby Greenland and Iceland due to the documented global rise in temperatures. Remember that we had above normal summer-like historic record heat last year as recently as December, just before the January El Nino "Deep Freeze" set in...
February 18 2010 - Another nice day, sunny, still only up to the mid 60's, but not as bad at sunset...
February 19 2010 - Friday Night Water Taxi
The customary warm sunshine that we were blessed with for the last several cold days was noticeably absent today, mostly cloudy all day long, with only occasional teasing bursts of brightness that hinted that the sun was up there somewhere. High temp was somewhere aroud the mid 60's, but at least the air was still, no sign of a breeze, so there was no wind chill dragging down the "feels like". Still, blading or biking of course did invoke a bit of a chill, so not much exercise today either, had to settle for long walks on the beach and mostly staying inside and working on our other blogs and websites, kind of like a snow day up north. Looking forward to weekend, supposed to get back up to near normal temps, just in time for the "in-landers" to invade our beach...
February 20 2010 - A warm day today, hot sunshine, no breeze, but still only in the mid 60's...
February 21 2010
Yet another weather front moves in from the Gulf of Medicola, yet another cloudy overcast sunset, but we did have a few hours of nice warm sunshine today, temps up into the mid 70's early but dropped a little at mid day, making it a little cool. Still crowds of inlanders and tourists flooded the beach today enjoying what to them was no doubt idyllic weather.
February 22 2010. At sunset this evening we have a dark gray overcast sky, winds from 25 to 30 knots, with a threat of pelting rain. Nothing video-genic, and not real nice weather to get out into, so we have passed on going over to the intracoastal boardwalk to even see what is going on. Just plain crazy abnormal weather here this winter. The entire day today was pretty icky, no sunshine, windy, off and on rain, cooler than is pleasant to get out in without the unpleasant chore of "bundling up".
February 24 2010 - A murky sunset after a stormy spring like day...
We enjoyed a very spring like day today, up into the 80's, humidity into the 90's, clouds and sun, lots of showers, thunder, strong winds, with two severe storm warnings over the course of the day. We even had flocks of noisily chirping migrating birds that would forage in the grass during calm spells. However, we are warned that our spring like weather is coming to an abrupt end tonight with yet another cold front meandering down out of the frozen northland, dropping temps again for several days...
February 25 2010 - Cold, Clear, and Calm...
We missed the actual sunset due to getting caught at an intracoastal drawbridge on our way to the observation tower at a nearby nature center. So, we caught this video from a bridge looking south over the south end of West Lake, with the Hollywood Beach barrier island to the left and the mangrove swamp to the right. Twas a beautiful day today, bright and clear with a warm sun, but the air was a little nippy. Supposed to be like that for the next couple of days, one last cold spell, we hope that's the last anyway, time for some warm weather.
The 2/27/2010 tsunami arrives at the intracoastal waterway all the way up into the Floridita peninsula. Although the much anticipated tsunami never surfaced in Hawaii today, it did finally arrive here at sunset, as witnessed by the above video (really only caused by the wake of a passing boat).
