May 18th, 2009 - At sunset, just for the record, the start of the rainy season...

The weather system that moved over Florida recently is a "subtropical low" that was speculated to possibly become tropical storm Ana, but did not quite make it to that intensity. It did meander over the entire state for a couple of days, moving very slowly. Here on the southeast tip of the peninsula, we were in the middle of the "eye" of the system for quite a while, so we did not experience the heavy rain and prolonged winds gusting over 50 mph such as was experienced up in Daytona through the Jacksonville area, and it was actually pretty nice here with just occasional showers. Kind of early for an almost tropical storm, but the rain was very beneficial to our drought stricken area...

May 20th, 2009 - The first Everglades thunderhead of the season...

May 21st, 2009 - It was actually quite nice today, despite the sunset and sunrise looking dreary (we are still getting some short pockets of "weather" from the lower backside of that almost-tropical-storm Ana as the meandering heavy duty "subtropical low" slowly crawls over into the gulf). That was not "Nessie" the water monster in the lower left of the video, but rather a palm frond that resembled some type of waterway critter...

May 31st, 2009

Posting the last sunset for the month of May for '09, we wanted to point out that if you observed a lot of storms for this start of our rainy season here, that it was announced that an all time record breaking rainfall was recorded for the month of May here in Broward and Dade counties as well as in many other counties across the state -- note that this was preceded by several months of a record breaking dry spell. So, with the unusually high winds, an increase in the number of cold spells, combined with frequent record breaking heat, this all would seem to indicate, maybe, what? Surely this cannot be "climate change" -- likely it is only because of all those useless glaciers and polar ice caps melting, causing some weird weather, just temporarily...

Update: three days later, ran across an article on Weather Underground's WunderBlog which pointed out that the surface temperatures of ocean waters had dropped significantly over the last seven months (as one reason to lower the predictions of hurricane intensities this year...). How right I was....but they did not correlate the world wide ice melt as the reason for the water cooling, of course. If you would like to peruse the article click on this link to "Change in Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly". Note the dark purple areas in figure 1 indicating the most significant temperature drop around the north Atlantic areas like Greenland, Iceland, et al, which also happens to be where all the ice is melting... Note the time and date on the article as 4:45 PM GMT on June 02, 2009, and you all know that we posted the above note three days before that article -- are we good or what?
